Whether you have lived in your home for 30 years or have just purchased a home, there are so many different home improvement projects you can complete that have a huge return for you and your home. When looking to list your home soon or later, giving your home a touch-up will boost its value. If there are a million home improvement projects you wish to complete for your home or you have no idea where to start, here are 5 home improvement projects that pay off.
The kitchen is considered the heart of the home. Potential buyers of your home will want to be able to envision themselves in the space and nothing turns buyers away like an outdated kitchen. Remodeling your kitchen is one of the best returns on investment projects. A major kitchen renovation would bring the most benefit whether it is to add value to your home or just for you or your family to enjoy. Installing new countertops, appliances, and cabinets can really bring a kitchen together.
When remodeling your kitchen, you may want to start small. Replacing the kitchen faucet, adding new kitchen hardware, and replacing old light fixtures are all inexpensive places to start. If replacing the cabinets is out of your budget, considering a fresh coat of paint to give them a new look. These types of small upgrades can improve the overall look of your kitchen.
Bathroom upgrades and renovations are a great investment to make to your home. Remodeling the bathroom can be a huge project, and intimidating at first to take on. However, minor and major bathroom renovations pay off when you are ready to sell. Minor upgrades can consist of installing a new mirror, updating the knobs or faucets, and installing new lighting. While these upgrades can be quick and easy, they make a huge difference in the appearance and functionality of your bathroom.
Major bathroom renovations can include completely gutting it and installing a new vanity, new tile flooring, new shower fixtures, and more. Either size of remodel you choose, they will both pay off in the end.
Your homes exterior is the first thing guests and potential buyers will notice. Focusing your efforts on the exterior of your home will increase your curb appeal and value in the long run. We understand that the task of updating your entire landscaping footprint can be intimidating, and you may not be sure where to start. We recommend starting small, a few strategically placed planters and cleaned up flower beds can go a long way.
Another inexpensive option to consider adding a pop of color to your front door. This is a small project that only takes a few hours to complete and can make your home stand out in a big way.
Garage Door Replacement
Another exterior project that can add great value is replacing your garage door. Garage doors are typically on the front of the house and grab a lot of attention for those passing by and people looking to purchase your home. The color and quality are two things on the list you should consider. Of course, how well it functions is another.
Lastly, a home improvement that is definitely worth considering is updating your flooring. Flooring is prone to have normal wear and tear from children, pets, and constant foot traffic. The material and look of it is what sets the tone for your home. When considering replacing or repair flooring to get the best return on investment possible, you should consider what will hold up the best and what looks the best. Hardwood flooring is one of the best options for your home due to its durability and price.
If you are looking to start some home improvement projects that will pay off in the long run, our professional team of handymen at House Doctors can help. From start to finish we will provide you with professional and quality services. Contact us today to find a location near you!

Looking for a way to liven up your favorite room? Adding an accent wall may be the solution for you! There are many options to choose from when designing your accent wall, it could even mean it is covered in an entirely different design and material than the other walls, such as brick, stone, or wood. A vibrant accent wall is a great way to give your home a fresh look and establish a focal point in your space. Consider the room’s purpose and the mood you are trying to create before you purchase your colors and materials. Accent walls provide a unique opportunity to bring color and texture into an otherwise basic space. Here are some tips on how to liven up your space with accent walls.
Choose The Perfect Color
The first way to emphasize an area in your room is to add color. Rich, vibrant colors usually work well for accent walls, but if you are leaning towards a more neutral color, think long and hard before you take the plunge. If painting an entire wall in a different color sounds over the top to you, try painting a pattern instead. Patterns such as stripes, polka dots, or geometric shapes, will allow pops of color to live on your wall without consuming it.
One of the simplest ways to make your space more interesting is to add texture. An accent wall doesn’t have to be a contrast in color, it can be anything you want it to be, with many more materials than just paint! Brick is a great example of a common accent wall that adds tons of texture to a room and creates a cozy environment. Other ideas of textured accent walls include wood, stone, paneling, and textured tile.
If you’re looking for a fun way to show off your personal style and flair, wallpaper may be just right for you! Wallpaper comes in countless colors and patterns that allow you to pick the perfect paper for your home. There are even 3D and textured options to choose from to help liven up your room. Wallpaper is a great option for an accent wall because it has the potential to create a subtle addition to a room or become a dramatic focal point depending on the look you’re going for. Wallpaper is a tool that has a wide range of versatility in room design that makes it perfect for an accent wall.
Create A Gallery
Do you have the perfect pieces to hang that will complete your space? Use them as an accent wall! A unique way to add an accent wall in your home is to hang your favorite pieces of art, photos, mirrors, and other statement pieces onto a single wall. This will not only personalize your space, but add texture and interest to your home. Hanging a collection of your favorite pieces will truly make your house feel like home.
Install Custom Shelving
A popular option in many living rooms is to have a wall of custom shelving installed. A wall of shelves allows you to customize your space to fit your needs, whether it be more storage or the perfect spot to hang the TV. With many options of materials, colors, and arrangements, an accent wall made of shelving is sure to bring style and functionality to any home.

Looking for a great way to get outdoors this summer? Create your own backyard oasis! Decks create a great outdoor space that’s comfortable for you and your family. Depending on where you live, your deck may encounter harsh weather throughout the year, such as snow, wind, or heavy rains. If you do live in an area with intense weather, getting your deck inspected regularly is a great way to ensure your deck is around for a long time. Need help getting your deck ready for summer? House Doctors can help your outside space look phenomenal just in time for warmer weather!
Repair your Deck
Your deck may need repairs after going through months of rough weather. Harsh rain, wind, ice, snow, and other intense weather can cause significant wear and tear to the deck’s structure. As a homeowner, it is important to check and fix any repairs before allowing people to use your deck again after the off season. One of the most common issues homeowners face when it comes to deck maintenance is rotting. Rotting when left untreated, can lead to the destroying of the deck’s shape and structure.Another dangerous issue to be aware of is potentially broken boards. Broken boards can be caused by rot, cracking, and age. Broken boards can be a safety hazard when left unmaintained and should be repaired to avoid any potential injury. You will also want to repair any wobbly railings that may be attached to your deck.
Clean Your Deck
Cleaning your deck is a task that should be done frequently, especially throughout the summer. You will want to give the deck an extra good rinse when the weather starts to warm up so that leftover debris from any harsh weather is cleared away! Debris should be cleaned to prevent stains and mildew from forming. You can start with grabbing a broom and sweeping off any dirt or dust you might find. Next is to decide which cleaning method you want to apply to your deck’s surface. One method to making your space look spotless is using deck cleaning solution. You can apply this and hand wash it with a scrub brush, then use a hose to rinse, after letting it sit for a couple of minutes. Another way to ensure your deck’s health is to apply a sealer, this shields the deck from any water damage that may occur. When applying a sealer, you will want to protect yourself from any chemicals, so wear a mask, gloves, and the correct eye equipment. If you want to avoid the hassle, House Doctors has experienced technicians who can perform efficient deck cleaning and repair for you!
After completing any repairs and cleanings, you’ll want to add the finishing touches to your deck to create the perfect summer spot for your family! The decoration possibilities are endless for outdoor spaces. A popular way to decorate is by hanging string lights on railings or zigzagging them above using poles. Adding lights increases visibility and overall safety, which makes the space more attractive and inviting to guests. Another important feature to add to your deck is furniture. Furniture can transform an outside area to feel more comfortable and relaxing. Our killed handymen can hang lights, assemble furniture, build custom pieces, and much more to give you the deck of your dreams this summer. Other decorating ideas we can help with include:

Your bedroom should be a place that you love to spend time in and relax at the end of the day. This is the room you will be spending the most time in, so it is important that you feel comfortable in it. Try to think about what inspires you and the changes that you could make in giving your master bedroom a new and improved makeover. Need inspiration? Check out our creative ideas and suggestions to redesign your master bedroom oasis.
Choose Your Bed Wisely
Your master bedroom will need to accommodate more than just your bed. It’s important to make sure that there is enough space for any additional furniture as well as walkways and empty space so the room doesn’t feel crowded. We also recommend reviewing multiple mattresses before purchasing a new one since you will be using this every night. If you have a smaller bedroom, be sure to take note of any measurements to ensure you get the right size. When choosing a headboard for your new space, you will realize very quickly there are a lot of options out there! From canopy beds to headboards fixed to the wall, it is easy to go down a rabbit hole. After getting your bed space together, you can add on some throw pillows to give your bed the perfect look.
Include Lots of Storage Space
Does your bedroom feel cluttered with all the miscellaneous objects that you have, but you don’t know what to do with them? If you want your bedroom to feel more open and spacious, consider adding additional storage. Adding storage space under your bed, on shelves and in your closet will allow you to have a more organized room and keep the room feeling light and airy.
- Add in storage bins for underneath your bed
- Get furniture that has shelves attached
- Add in wall shelves
- Put in a headboard that can hold objects
- Reorganize the closet
Find the Right Paint
Your bedroom is your own personal sanctuary after a day’s hard work. Set the tone for your bedroom by adding a pop of color or colors that you find soothing and calming. Neutral colors such as grey or white will allow your room to feel more spacious and give you the opportunity to accent with vibrant colors. You can easily give your room the pop of color it needs by choosing vibrant pillows, colorful art, and decorative bedding. If you want to make your room stand out, consider adding bolder colors such as yellow or pink to your walls or your accessories.
Add a Seating Area
Does your bedroom lack a seating area? Consider adding in a seat or small couch to complete your bedroom’s relaxing atmosphere. Since furniture takes up a good amount of space, try finding some that can serve for more than one purpose. Adding additional seating can give you a place besides your bed to sit comfortably in while reading a book or eating a snack. A great example of a multi-functional piece of furniture could be a futon because of how it can go from a couch to a bed in minutes. Looking to maximize your space? Put a cozy bench for the end of your bed that can also be used for storage.
Lighting is Everything
The perfect master bedroom needs to have the perfect lighting. When it comes to your sleep, the darker the bedroom is the better. However, during the daytime you want your bedroom to feel light and airy. If your bedroom is not receiving enough natural light, you will need to provide the light yourself. Sheer draperies over a window is a great solution for privacy in the evenings while still allowing the natural light to flow in during the day.
Replacing the light bulbs to newer ones or even a brighter tone to fit your room is an easy way to make a change. Looking to match the rest of your room’s décor? Try incorporating lamps into your space to add extra lighting on top of any overhead lighting. Finding the perfect level of lighting can be a challenging but fun project, for more information on making these upgrades to your home give us a call today.

Is your home ready for Spring? Now is the perfect time to take a look at your exterior and decide what repairs and improvements your home needs. Many exterior projects such as gutter cleaning, replacing rotted wood and window caulking can go a long way to improve your curb appeal and protect your home. Outdoor home renovations can enhance the look of your home and offer increase the value of your property.
what is home maintenance? Our definition
of home maintenance is basically anything that involves checking or maintaining
structures, appliances or fixtures in your home. Running a home, whether it’s
big or small can be a pretty intimidating task to say the least. The reality of
life is that it’s all too easy to let the maintenance of your home slide to the
bottom of your priority list; but it should be made a top priority. Here’s a
few projects you should be doing around and outside the house. Need help? Give
us a call, no job is too small! 888-HOUSEDOC
Gutters and downspouts
Your home’s primary defense against flooding; the health of your home. Gutters are often overlooked by homeowners but they definitely shouldn’t be. Gutters have one main purpose: divert water away from you home. Heavy rain can cause a major disaster to your home, failure to keep up with your gutters could land you in deep water. Spring is a great time to pull leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts. It’s also important to reattach gutters that have pulled away from the house. We also recommend you run a hose on the roof and check for proper drainage. If there is a leak, dry the area and use caulking or epoxy to seal the leak.
Caulking provides both a great visual appearance and more
importantly creates a seal between two areas of surface to keep water from
getting into your home. As the weather gets warmer, it’s a good idea to Inspect
all caulking and replace if deteriorating. Scrape out all of the eroding caulk
and re-caulk needed area.
Window and Door Screens
Windows and door screens are the barriers of defense for
your home; they keep the pests out and let the fresh air in. We recommend
having the screen cleaned and checked for holes. If holes are bigger than a
quarter, that is plenty of room for bugs to climb in. Patch holes or replace
the screen. You can also save bad screen to patch holes next year. Remember
that wind can ruin screens and frames.
Deck and Porches
A deck can serve and a great outdoor space and a natural
extension of your house, however cleaning and maintenance is required. A
well-maintained deck can add to the property value of your home. Check all
decks, patios, porches, stairs, and railings for loose members and
deterioration. We recommend that open decks and wood fences need to be treated
every 4-6 years, depending on how much exposure they get to sun and rain. If
you aren’t sure where to begin when it comes to maintaining your deck, we would
be happy to help! Let’s make the most out of your outdoor space!
There is a lot involved when talking about
the responsibilities of maintaining your home; not every can do it and not
everyone wants to do it themselves. That’s where we come in. Give us a call
today to tackle your Spring to-do list! 888- HOUSEDOC
Spending time outdoors on your deck or patio is a sure sign that warmer weather has arrived! Decks are exposed to harsh conditions including rain, sunlight, and the normal wear and tear of life. Staining your deck is a step you should take to keep your deck looking good for years to come. When it comes to choosing the best deck stain, you have lots of choices. In general, the more opaque the stain, the better chance it has of against the weather. Wood decks require re-staining every few years, and it is more complicated than simply pressure washing and applying a new coat of stain. The old layer of stain will need to be stripped off before cleaning the deck and making it stain ready.
The last thing you want to is to begin your project and see rain, be sure to check your weather forecasts to choose the right weekend to stain a deck. Go slow! Take your time and be sure to go slowly to prevent over-spraying, spills, and a sloppy finish. If your deck is new, cleaning it really well requires removing the “mill scale” that would prevent the stain from penetrating the pores of the wood.
Older decks have a lot of dirt! They also undergo fading from the rays of the sun. Older decks can also be known to grow mildew in places that may not dry very easily. If you have any buildup of old stains on your deck, you will need to use a stain stripper to remove them. The chemicals involved in this process are more caustic so please be sure to follow the directions carefully. Any spots that of stain that does not come off during the cleaning process can usually be removed with a palm-type sander. This can be done pretty easily once the deck has dried. Any old spots will really be noticeable after you apply your new coat of stain so don’t cut any corners here!
After you apply your first coat of stain, sometimes a second coat is needed. Most wood stains require at least four hours to dry per 100 square feet, so be patient! House Doctors recommends waiting a full day in between staining and putting your furniture back. Remember, deck stains require time to cure!

We serve thousands of homeowners across the country every year with our outstanding home remodeling, maintenance, and repair services, and we proudly back all of our work with a one-year labor guarantee. Although you have rented Santorini rental car, it is good to know what rules should be followed and what should not do with a rental car.
Do not smoke in cars
Most of Santorini’s rental car companies maintain a smoking-free car fleet. However, if someone smokes in the rented car, you can expect to have to pay a cleaning fee as well as for burnt-up carpeting.
Do not take the car outside of the country unless you have requested a landing permit
The rented vehicle will be subject to specific rules by Greece Rental Car if you use it in another country. If you transfer the car to another country without permission, then you can count that the company will charge a separate fee at the car drop off. Since you did not indicate the exit, this may mean that the car’s insurance will be terminated during the stay at abroad, and in the case of failure, there will not be any assistance. Thus, you are fully responsible for any accident or defect.
Some countries require an international driving license, others do not, but there is also some country where the car may need special permits, or where rental cars are not allowed at all. Do not trust in “they will not know,” since almost every rental car has a tracking system that warns the company when the car arrives near the border.
If you want to give more drivers, let’s talk ahead
The Santorini rental car can only be driven by persons on the contract. You can’t give the car to another without the permission of the rental company, even for the “just go to the store”.
Most car rental company does not charge any extra fees for the second driver. Failure to do it may cause a problem in the case of an accident. If you are causing an accident and you are not listed as a certified driver on the contract, you must take responsibility for the full value of the vehicle.
You do not have to compete or tow with the rental car
Cars are for normal street use, do not use for racing, do not take it to a test track. If this causes failure, your wallet can sorry it.
Keep the car key and traffic license in a safe place
If the rental car’s key is abandoned or damaged, it can be very expensive. The worst scenario is not just the loss of keys and papers, but also the rental car.
Do not leave the key in the car
When you get out of the Santorini rental car, for just a short time, take out the key and take it with you. Do not leave it in the ignition, on the seat and in luggage. If the key remains inside and the doors locked, you will call the car rental company immediately. Do not attempt to break through the window under any circumstances.
Do not leave the car registration certificate in the glove compartment
Imagine the following situation: you dine at a restaurant while a thief is breaking your car and looking for valuable stuff. He opens the glove box and sees the certificate with your address as well as the contract with your dates and credit card details. According to statistics, in this case, when the owner notices that his car was stolen, the thieves had already broken into their house.
Therefore, you should keep it in your wallet with the driving license or in your bag.
Do not leave the keys unattended
Who would think that the keys to the rental car could be stolen from your table at the hotel’s terrace while you are in the buffet? Unfortunately, this happens often. If the keys are stolen, check the car where you parked and call the car rental company.
Do not take the key into the water
Do not take the key with you when you go swimming. Sensitive electronics can’t handle the water and probably you will leave the key while swimming.
Do not bring your key and certificate when travelling to the home
At the end of the rental period, the rented vehicle and its keys and papers will always be returned to the lessor. Who can’t drop off the car in working hours finds a box at the company’s premises where the keys can be dropped. Under no circumstances should you take them home.
Do not leave valuables things in the car when parking
Pay attention when parking the car, leave no value in the cabin, even for a short time. If the car was broken, the lock was damaged, you call the rental company immediately, and they provide assistance and tell you what to do.
Strange Things That People Do While Driving Car Rental
Laws prohibit the use of a mobile phone while driving car rental in Santorini, but many things can divert your attention to the most important thing, the driving. Whether you find the driving car rental fun or tiresome, you have probably developed more habits to entertain yourselves while driving. For example, singing or talking to yourselves – almost everything is guilty of doing so.
Let’s take a look at the most common habits:
You are talking to yourselves or other drivers
Sometimes when anger takes over the place, you find yourselves crying to another driver who is unlikely to hear this. And often it happens that you talk to yourselves. Regardless of whether something funny happened before or you made a driving mistake, some of the best conversations are in your car, with you.
Watch the other drivers and make stories about people
When you are at a traffic light, the first thing to look at the people around you. You decide who they are, where are they going and what their story is until the light turns green.
Turn off the music when searching for a parking space
You’re in a new place and you need to find the right house, so you turn off the music to see the house well, do not? This is a crazy method that many drivers are using, even in the days of Google Maps.
You are worried about silly things
Are people watching the speed of wipers? Did the other driver look bad at me? Did I leave the oven turned on at home? Even the best drivers are likely to spend more time examining their driving habits and worrying about things they can’t control.
Nose drill and singing
This sounds rough, but every third man drill his nose while driving, and statistics are similar for women as well. But attention – if you think no one sees this, you are wrong, the drivers are likely to notice it.
9 of 10 people admit that they are singing while driving. Whether your favourite pop number is on the radio, or you sing in the original performance, the first seat of the car is the best place.
You try to make your makeup (or make your hair – the guys too)
It’s no worse than you grab your eyes with your favourite mascara or smear your lipstick and finally look like Joker.
Snapchat, you talk on the phone or you write messages
Sometimes driving is one of the best ways to make a funny snap. And of course, there are car selfies. It is forbidden in many counties to talk on the phone or write messages. You want to believe that you are invincible, but you have to stop it.
You make your own dance party
Do not do it, as if you did not dance when your favourite music sounded!
There are some strange habits without the need for completeness:
- eating breakfast/lunch
- solving Rubik’s cube
- nail cutting, nail polish
- reading book
- brushing, flossing
- shaving with an electric razor
- making homework
- insert your contact lens
- picking your eyebrow
- hair drying with the ventilator
- hair twisting
- reading newspaper
- video production, video editing
- pressing acne
- using laptops
- training with hand weights

10 things to do in Santorini 2020
From 1st to 10th of April 2020 I visited Santorini for the first time, which did not take long to become my new favourite Greek island.
The relatively few days of my stay allowed me to explore many aspects of the island and meet interesting people. So, I ended up with a list of 10 things to do if you’re ever in Santorini. Of course do not miss the chance to book a Santorini private tour.
1. Taste Santorini beer
One of the traditional products of the island is its beer called Donkey. There are red, yellow and crazy donkey, 3 different names for each of its 3 different flavours.
My favourite was red, the sweetest, since I love the sweet flavours of the spirits. If you are interested in buying these beers as… souvenirs, it will be difficult to bring them home because they need a refrigerator directly.
So… enjoy the pleasure while on the island! But you can carry their traditional sweet wine, Vincanto, which does not spoil even if the bottle is opened. Just be careful not to damage the cork.
2. Swim in the Monolith
You may have heard that Santorini is not famous for its beaches. But there are some exceptions to the rule, one of which is the Monolith Sea, which you will find on the way to the airport. It has wild waters, but it can satisfy all tastes.
Part of it is organized, with sun loungers, beach bars and tavernas, and as you progress it becomes more secluded for you who love the privacy and want to enjoy your swim at no cost.
3. Take pictures in the Caldera 2020
Caldera is called the whole western part of the island, which contains many elevated locations to enjoy the view and capture it with your camera! For example, I recommend the Caldera View Café Bar Restaurant, which has a specially designed photo area. If you have time, enjoy a rich breakfast there! What better than Greek breakfast with a view?
4. Explore the archaeological site of Akrotiri
Akrotiri is dominated by remnants of a prehistoric settlement that was first inhabited during the late Neolithic period and was levelled by the ash of the volcanic eruption. If you are a student or teacher, do not forget to take your card with you as you will not have to pay for entrance.
5. Enjoy a meal at Panorama Restaurant 2020
You can combine your visit to the archaeological site of Akrotiri with a dining stop at the Panorama Restaurant which is also located in the area. A quiet restaurant with prompt service, affordable prices and a wide selection of traditional Cycladic dishes.
And bonus… a great view that compensates even the most demanding visitor! Outside, the restaurant also has a children’s playground, thus meeting the needs of all members of a family with young children.
6. Shopping from Pottery Studio “Egli’s”
It is a pottery workshop, which is trademarked by handmade fish and donkeys. If you are leaning towards craftsmanship or just an appetite and love for art, you know that Pottery Studio Egli’s takes place at specific times each year in ceramics.
7. Get to know the art of wine at Roussos Winery
It is the oldest winery in Santorini, operating since 1836, where wines are being researched for cancer. Start your visit with a walk in the lab to get acclimated to the… secrets of the profession, try the production wines (red, rose and white) and leave a note in the impression book.
At this point, I would like to personally thank the owner, Mr Rousseau for his warm welcome and the wonderful gift he gave me: a bottle of Nama wine, used in the mystery of marriage. I promised him I would open it at my wedding and I intend to keep my promise. This gift has great emotional value for me because it was also the first I received as a… blogger!
8. Visit the Tomato Museum!
I’ve travelled to several countries around the world, heard about potato museums, artichoke workshops but never about a tomato museum! And so its uniqueness is one reason to visit it.
Daily tours (reduced for students) are paid for guided tours (in Greek and English) of the old industrial tomato factory that now serves as a museum space. The tour is short and not at all tedious, and at the end of it you can watch and a video of testimonies of people who once worked there.
If you want to extend your visit, there is a coffee shop where you can sample tomatoes or other specialities as well as cheesecake tomatoes. Even for me when the tomato and tomato dishes in general do not overwhelm me, this sweet was a delightful addition! As you leave, don’t forget to walk through the museum boutique to make your own souvenir pack!
Last but not least, the tomato museum hosts various exhibitions from time to time (I visited modern art exhibitions at the time), and has a specially designed space for summer performances and concerts.
9. Attend performances at the Fira High School
Throughout the summer there are mainly concerts for both young and older audiences. For example, on August 7th while I was on the island, Constantine Argyros who is also my favourite Greek singer happened to sing.
You buy tickets at the entrance of the high school on the day of the concert about 1.5 hours before it starts. If you want to find a place, it would be a good idea to be there at least 1 hour earlier. There are parking spaces just opposite the school.
10. See the sunset in Oia 2020
I left this particular activity not because it is the best but because it is the most… common and you might leave with a complaint if you do not taste it. In my opinion the sunset in Santorini is just as beautiful and spectacular as the sunset in any other part of the world and I find the promotion around it to be somewhat excessive and purely for tourist reasons.
Anyway… If you want to watch it, remember that the sun is setting exactly at 20:19 and to find a good place, you need to be at Oia castle at least 1 hour earlier. But if you don’t get there, there is an area near Oia called Finikia and it has an equally beautiful view of the sunset.

Install Grab Bars
We recommend installing grab bars in high-risk fall areas such as bathrooms, hallways, and bedrooms to decrease the chance of someone with mobility issues slipping and falling causing injuries. Installing grab bars near the toilet and shower is a good idea because these areas often can become slippery surfaces.
Installing Outdoor Ramps
You may not have someone in your home with a wheelchair but exit and entry ramps are not just for wheelchair access. Eliminating the struggle of getting up and down the stairs is a substantial modification that can allow maintaining one’s balance easier to manage.
With the advances in technology, touchless faucets in your kitchen and bathroom are excellent for people whole struggle with arthritis or gripping issues. If you do not wish to go the touchless route, you can always replace twist faucet handles with levers to make it easier to manage. Another popular upgrade is to install anti-scald faucets to prevent sudden bursts of hot water.
The Right Flooring
The wrong flooring can be the cause of many trips and falls as you become older. We recommend that if there is carpet in the home that it is securely attached and at a maximum of half an inch thick. Flooring that is ADA compliant and or anti-slip means the flooring material has gone through a friction test. If you have a bathroom that is in good shape and doesn’t need a full remodel, you can also buy anti-slip coating and have this rolled onto existing floors with a paint roller. The anti-slip coating can last anywhere from 3-5 years and one gallon can cover about 400 square feet.
